Frequently attacked online. Their presence alone does not establish that a food is harmful. We flag them as context and look harder at the whole product.

Sweeteners

They can reduce added sugar, while each sweetener has its own evidence and trade-offs. We identify which one is there rather than lumping them together.

Emulsifiers & gums

A broad category used for texture and stability. Some are being actively researched; the presence of an emulsifier is not itself a diagnosis or safety verdict.

A rapidly digestible refined carbohydrate used for texture and bulking. Its position in the ingredient list and the rest of the food matter.

Degree of processing can be useful context, but nutrition, ingredients, portion size, frequency and the overall dietary pattern all matter too.

The Slop Score is an explainable label heuristic — not a medical-risk score. It deliberately gives more weight to stronger nutrition signals and less weight to ingredients that are mainly controversial online.

🔴 Stronger signal

Examples include very high salt, high sugar or saturated fat in the available nutrition data, and partially hydrogenated oils. These carry more weight in the score.

🟠 Context flag

Added sugars, refined carbohydrates and some additives may be worth understanding, particularly in foods eaten frequently. They are not automatically a declaration that the product is unsafe.

🟣 Debated online

Seed oils, sweeteners, emulsifiers and other viral topics can be surfaced for transparency without being treated as proven dangers simply because they are controversial.
