CHOP THE SLOP

The no-nonsense shopping checklist.

You do not need a perfect label. You need enough information to compare similar products without getting distracted by scary words, health halos or viral claims.

1. Compare like with like.

Compare bread with bread, cereal with cereal, sauce with sauce. A chocolate biscuit does not become a health food because its ingredient list is shorter.

2. Read the nutrition panel as well as the ingredients.

Ingredient presence tells you what is there. Amounts of sugar, salt, saturated fat, fibre and protein often tell you more about the overall product.

3. Ask what each extra ingredient is doing.

Some improve texture, shelf life or consistency. An unfamiliar name is not automatically a danger signal.

4. Watch stronger signals first.

Prioritise the reasons the scanner marks as stronger signals rather than treating every additive or seed oil as equivalent.

5. Use frequency as context.

Something eaten occasionally is a different decision from something eaten every day. Perfection is not the target.

6. Ignore front-of-pack theatre.

“Natural”, “protein”, “plant-based”, “artisan” or “clean” can be useful descriptions, but none replaces the actual label.

7. Verify viral claims.

Burning, stretching, dissolving or glowing food on camera is not a substitute for controlled testing or a published ingredient list.

Chop the Slop is a label explainer, not medical advice. Formulations change, so check the product in your hand.
