McDonald’s corporate US food-quality fact sheet says the company purchased 719 million pounds of beef in the US in 2023. That is a far better starting point for a US calculation than multiplying an unsourced global burger-count meme by an assumed patty weight.
What a serious calculation needs
You need the geography and year, the amount of beef purchased, the relevant cattle slaughter/production data, realistic usable-beef yields, and clarity about whether you are counting all beef from an animal or only material suitable for ground beef. Change those inputs and the answer changes.
So, does the US beef supply make the claim impossible?
No. USDA reports 27.0 billion pounds of U.S. commercial beef production in 2023. McDonald’s says it purchased 719 million pounds of beef in the U.S. that year. Put on the same simple weight basis, the McDonald’s figure is about 2.7% of total U.S. commercial beef production. That comparison does not prove every supply-chain detail, but it does show there is no basic “not enough beef exists” contradiction in those numbers.
The arithmetic
719 million ÷ 27.0 billion = 0.0266, or roughly 2.7%.
This is an order-of-magnitude check, not a claim that every pound McDonald’s buys maps perfectly onto USDA production accounting. Imports, exports, inventory, product mix and processing all matter in a full supply-chain analysis.
Current verdict
The viral “there cannot be enough cows” argument does not survive this basic same-year U.S. check. That does not mean every sourcing question is settled; it means the headline arithmetic is not evidence of a hidden meat source.
