A TikTok ADHD checklist is not a diagnosis

Relatable ADHD content may prompt useful questions, but a short social-media checklist cannot replace the full specialist assessment used to diagnose ADHD.

MISLEADING

Relatable ADHD content may prompt useful questions, but a short social-media checklist cannot replace the full specialist assessment used to diagnose ADHD.

What's true

Someone may recognise genuine difficulties in educational content and decide to seek help. ADHD itself is a recognised condition; the problem here is treating broad or relatable traits as diagnostic proof.

What diagnosis involves

NICE says ADHD should be diagnosed by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional using a full clinical and psychosocial assessment, developmental and psychiatric history, information across settings, and assessment of mental state.

What a checklist misses

Symptoms need context: history, persistence, impairment, different settings and other possible explanations. A thirty-second “five signs you have ADHD” video cannot establish all of that.

Better wording

“These experiences can occur in ADHD and may be worth discussing with a professional” is very different from “If you do these five things, you have ADHD.”
