“Oreos won’t burn.” What does the blowtorch video actually prove?

THE VERDICT

A blowtorch video is not a chemical analysis. Charring, glowing, melting or holding shape under heat does not by itself identify a hidden ingredient. The useful evidence is the published ingredient list and nutrition panel.

The claim

Videos circulate in which an Oreo or similar factory-made food is heated aggressively. Viewers may interpret unusual-looking charring, glowing patterns or the food retaining some structure as proof that it contains undisclosed or non-food material.

What the label actually says

Ingredient lists vary by country. Oreo's current US product page lists enriched wheat flour, sugar, palm oil, soybean and/or canola oil, cocoa processed with alkali, high-fructose corn syrup, leavening, salt, soy lecithin, chocolate and artificial flavour. Mondelez's UK information lists wheat flour, sugar, palm and rapeseed oils, cocoa, wheat starch, glucose-fructose syrup, raising agents, salt, soya lecithin, sodium hydroxide and flavouring.

That is enough to have a real discussion. You can reasonably prefer a biscuit with fewer ingredients, less added sugar, or ingredients you recognise. You do not need the blowtorch experiment to make that choice.

What actually matters

Read the label. Compare the product with alternatives. Look at how much added sugar, salt and saturated fat it contributes to the diet, and decide how often you want to eat it. “Highly processed” and “secretly fake” are not the same claim.
